Find Volunteer Opportunities That Match Your Interests

Find The Right Opportunity iStock_enjoy

There are many ways to search for volunteer opportunities.  If you want to search the entire database, click the button to the left.  The search screen allows you to specify an area of interest, location, the social group you prefer, time of day you want to volunteer, and your area of interest.  The more options you select, the narrower your search.

If you would like to volunteer for an event, the best way to see what's scheduled, is to click on the "Event Calendar" button.  Once there, if you find something of interest, all you have to do is click on the title and it will link you to the opportunity listing.

What if you don't find what you want?  You can do a number of things. First, you can call an agency you like and ask the coordinator if there are other volunteer opportunities available in addition to the listings found on Volunteer Hawaii.  You can also visit the agency's web site, which is listed on the agency's overview along with contact information.

If you do not find something right away, don't get discouraged.  If you have a Volunteer Hawaii account, make sure you have selected the option to have emails sent to you when opportunities are posted in your area of interest.  This "passive" way of searching can often produce rewarding results.

Plan Ahead

Always plan ahead. Some agencies require background checks or TB clearances before you can volunteer.  Ask the agency representative if there are any special requirements before committing yourself.  Understand that, even though you are working for free, it isn't really free.  Agency personnel have to plan your work, train you, and provide needed supplies.  Therefore, give them the respect and lead time needed to help you help them.

Hidden Rewards

Find something you enjoy.  Every organization has a culture.  Make sure you find an appropriate fit. Volunteering is an opportunity to meet new people and learn new things. It is also a way to develop your skills. Ask your supervisor for feedback about your work. If there is an area where you feel weak, ask if you can do work that will help you develop your skills, knowledge and abilities. What you do as a volunteer can be an important addition to your resume, so make the best of the opportunity and do your best. In addition, you never know when a paid position might become available in an organization where you have volunteered. The best way to obtain a new job is to show your prospective employer how great you really are!!!!!
